PD: mis disculpas, el sitio requiere registro para entrar a los foros, a continuación lo dejo en el idioma original (estoy ahora metido con el D-fend configurando otros juegos como Descent o Jazz Jackrabbit)

Playing Old AbandonWare DOS Games in a Pentium 4/AMD 64 PC

A few days ago, i've think to play in my pc a few older games (like Duke Nukem 3D) in my Athlon64 - Windows XP Pro pc... Because these games are very old, they don't have good compatibility with the Operative Systems-Processors that we use now, so i been looking for a way to enjoy and run these "old school" shooters. The mainly reason that they don't run in Windows Xp is because all of they run in DOS mode. I've found on internet and DOS emulator that can run this games without problems, but using just the prompt is very difficult to configure and use, so we will use together the frontend D-Fend. I have the profiles of the games ready to play, so u don't need to configure nothing more than have the games, install the programs, import the settings (with some sound setings) and ready! .

WHAT WE NEED:

- DosBox 0.65           (Download) - homepage http://dosbox.sourceforge.net
- D-Fend 2.0.62.42      (Download) - homepage http://members.home.nl/mabus
- a D-Fend Profile       (Download) - profile of Duke Nukem 3D
- a copy of Duke Nukem 3D             - see      http://www.arcades3d.net
- or see section H.-

Getting started...

A.- INSTALLATION TO PLAY DUKE NUKEM 3D

Ok, we need to download the 2 utilities (DOSBOX, D-Fend), extract the zip and save the profile of duke nukem 3d.dfe and save them in a place that u easily remember (like desktop).

Create 2 folder in C:\, one called Games, and another inside on it called Duke Nukem 3D (C:\Games\Duke Nukem 3D\) and put the game files. ***this is important because the profiles have these folders***.

B.- INSTALLATION OF DOSBOX/D-FEND

First we will install DosBOx, to do this just run the file downloaded before, don't change folder or nothing, just press next until the end.

Then, install D-Fend in the same way with DosBox, but when ask u where u have installed  DosBox, give it the installation folder of it (it will be in C:\Program Files\DosBox\)

So, we have DosBox and D-Fend installed, the duke nukem 3d files in C:\Games\Duke Nukem 3D\ folder, all fine!

C.- INSTALLATION OF PROFILES IN D-FEND

Ading a game to D-Fend is very easy, but with all of those settings... that's the hard part, so we'll use the profiles that are previously configured.

Execute D-Fend, in File select Import Profile... and search the downloaded profile (in this case, duke nukem 3d.dfe) and import it, then if d-fend ask u if it search for the executable, select DUKE3D.EXE from your folder in C:\Games\Duke Nukem 3D\

D.- SOUND SETTINGS OF DUKE NUKEM

We need to configure the sound settings in the setup of the game, with the emulated settings so...

Start D-Fend from the icon of the desktop, select Duke Nukem 3D, but instead of double clicking (or Enter), we will use the right button, and then RUN SETUP (or Shift-Enter). A DOS blue screen will appear where we see SOUND SETUP, enter and run CHOOSE SOUND FX CARD and check or change to these settings:

SNAPSHOT OF SOUND SETTINGS

Current Address       - 0x220
Current Type          - Sound Blaster or Compatible
Current Interrupt     - 7
Current 8-bit DMA    - 1
Current 16-bit DMA  - 5

Then enter to USE THESE SETTINGS AND CONTINUE... (if all are ok), then just simply select all the bigger options:

Number of Voices         - 8
Number of Mixing Bits   - 16 Bit Mixing
Number of Channels     - Stereo Sound
Mixing Rate                  - 22 Khz

Then enter to CHOOSE MUSIC CARD, and select Sound Blaster. Press ESC button to return to the main screen.

E.- SCREEN SETTINGS OF DUKE NUKEM

In the main screen of setup, select SCREEN SETUP and select 320x200 (Normal Mode), press Enter, then press two times ESC to exit and Save the settings.

NOTE: Why don't use 640x480 or 800x600 VESA Modes? they don't run fine and very choppy. (including in my Athlon64 pc)

F.- RUNNING DUKE NUKEM 3D IN D-FEND.

Now, if u have done all correctly, run D-Fend, double click the Duke Nukem 3d icon and the game will run.

G.- PROFILES TO USE ANOTHER DOS GAMES

The others profiles that i have are:

NAME            FOLDERS TO PUT THE GAME FILES

Duke Nukem 3D             C:\Games\Duke Nukem 3D\
Duke Nukem Atomic Edition    C:\Games\Duke Nukem Atomic\
Rise of the Triad              C:\Games\Rise Of The Triad\
Shadow Warrior               C:\Games\Shadow Warrior\

All profiles in one zip (Download Zip) (Download Rar)

H.-OTHER WAYS TO PLAY DUKE3D/SHADOW WARRIOR IN WINDOWS XP

Another way to play Duke Nukem 3D/Shadow Warrior with better resolutions, without using DosBox/D-Fend is using the GRP original files (duke3d.grp/sw.grp) and the port JFDUKE3D/JSW available at http://jonof.edgenetwork.org/

THE END :-D

NOTE: Duke Nukem and Shadow Warrior use the same graphic engine "BUILD", so needs the right sound/screen configuration (see sections D/E).

My cpu is a Athlon64 3200+/512 Mb/Nvidia FX 5200 AGP/Sound Blaster Live, but they can run in with no problem in Sempron/Pentium 4/ Celeron cpu's.

NOTE2: sorry about my english, i'm chilean.
